Condensers
The air conditioning condenser sheds heat from the refrigerant after it leaves the compressor, converting it from a hot gas back into a liquid. It sits in front of the radiator in the airflow.
What it does
High-pressure refrigerant gas passes through the condenser core, where airflow removes heat and the gas condenses to liquid before continuing to the expansion valve and evaporator.
Signs a condenser is failing
- Air conditioning that blows cool rather than cold, worst in slow traffic
- Visible damage or bent fins on the front face
- Oily residue around the core or connections, indicating a refrigerant leak
- High-pressure faults reported during air conditioning diagnosis
When to replace them
Not scheduled. Replaced after impact damage from road debris, corrosion, or a leak. Its exposed position makes it vulnerable.

Condensers questions
Should the receiver drier be replaced with the condenser?
Yes. Once the system has been opened to atmosphere the drier has absorbed moisture and can no longer protect the system. On many vehicles it is integrated into the condenser anyway.
Why is my air conditioning worse in traffic?
At low speed the condenser depends entirely on the cooling fan for airflow. A blocked or damaged condenser, or a fan that is not running, shows up first in slow traffic and improves once the vehicle is moving.
