Steering Columns and Couplers
The steering column connects the steering wheel to the steering rack, using universal joints and a flexible coupler to route the shaft around the engine bay while transmitting driver input.
What it does
Rotation from the steering wheel passes down the column through one or more joints to the rack pinion. The column also carries the ignition switch, indicator stalks and often collapses in a frontal impact.
Signs a steering column coupler is failing
- A knocking or notchy feel through the steering wheel
- Free play at the wheel before the road wheels respond
- A clunk from the bulkhead area when turning
- Stiffness or binding at certain steering angles
When to replace them
Not scheduled. Couplers and universal joints are replaced when play or notchiness develops.
What to confirm before ordering

What causes play in the steering wheel?
Worn column universal joints or a perished flexible coupler are common causes, along with wear in the rack itself or in the track rod ends. Have the whole path checked rather than replacing one component on a guess.
Why does electric power steering change the part?
On many vehicles the assist motor and torque sensor are built into the column, which makes it a different and more expensive assembly that may also need coding after fitting.
