Timing Chain Assemblies
A timing chain assembly is the complete set of chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets that keeps the crankshaft and camshafts synchronised.
What it does
The chain drives the camshafts from the crankshaft. The hydraulic tensioner maintains correct tension and the guides control the chain path so it does not slap or jump a tooth.
Signs a timing chain kit is failing

When to replace them
Not a fixed interval on most engines, but chain stretch and guide wear are common at higher mileage. Any cold-start rattle should be investigated immediately.

Should the whole timing kit be replaced or just the chain?
Replace the assembly. Chain, guides and tensioner wear together, and the labour to reach them is identical, so fitting a new chain against worn guides simply brings the next failure forward.
What does a stretched timing chain sound like?
A rattle from the front of the engine on cold start, before oil pressure fills the tensioner. It typically quietens after a few seconds, which is exactly why it gets ignored.
