Air Filters

An air filter removes dust and grit from the air entering the engine, protecting the bores, rings and airflow sensor from abrasive contamination.

What it does

Incoming air passes through a pleated paper or synthetic element that traps particles before the air reaches the throttle body and cylinders.

Signs a air filter is failing

Reduced power under load, particularly on climbs
A visibly dirty or clogged element on inspection
Airflow sensor fault codes caused by a damaged element
A whistling or roaring intake noise

When to replace them

Typically every second service, and more often on gravel or dusty routes. Inspect rather than working to distance alone.

Can I clean an air filter instead of replacing it?

Tapping loose dust out of a paper element buys a little time, but it does not restore the element and compressed air will damage the paper. Standard paper filters are replacement items.

How often should the air filter be changed on dusty roads?

Considerably more often than the service schedule suggests. On regular gravel use, inspect at every oil service and replace whenever the element is visibly loaded.
