Oil Filters

An oil filter removes metal particles and combustion by-products from engine oil before it reaches the bearings, protecting the engine from abrasive wear.

What it does

Oil from the pump passes through the filter medium before reaching the oil galleries. A bypass valve maintains flow if the filter blocks, and an anti-drainback valve keeps oil in the filter when the engine stops.

Signs a oil filter is failing

There are rarely direct symptoms, which is why the filter is replaced on schedule
A rattle on cold start can indicate a failed anti-drainback valve
Low oil pressure warnings if the filter is severely blocked

When to replace them

At every oil service without exception. It is the least expensive insurance against bearing wear in the entire service.

Can I reuse an oil filter for a second service?

No. The medium is loaded with the contaminants it captured, and a blocked filter opens its bypass valve, which then sends unfiltered oil straight to the bearings.

Why does a cheap oil filter matter?

The valves inside it do the work you never see. A failed anti-drainback valve lets oil drain back to the sump when the engine stops, so the next cold start runs briefly without oil pressure.
