Fuel Tanks
The fuel tank stores fuel and houses the pump, level sender and associated plumbing. Tanks are made from moulded plastic or pressed steel depending on the application.
What it does
The tank holds fuel and manages vapour through a venting system. Baffles inside limit fuel movement under braking and cornering so the pump pickup stays submerged.
Signs a fuel tank is failing
- A fuel smell around the vehicle or a visible leak
- Physical damage from an impact or grounding
- Corrosion on steel tanks, particularly around the seams
- Fuel level readings that behave erratically
When to replace them
Not scheduled. Replaced after impact damage, corrosion or a leak.
What to confirm before ordering
Have these ready and the counter can usually confirm the part in under a minute.
- Tank capacity and whether the vehicle is two or four wheel drive, which often changes tank shape
- Steel or plastic construction
- Whether the sender and pump transfer across or are supplied with it
- Correct straps, seals and mounting hardware

Can a leaking fuel tank be repaired?
Steel tanks can sometimes be repaired professionally after proper purging, which is specialist work. Plastic tanks are generally replaced, because a reliable repair is difficult and the consequences of failure are severe.
Does the fuel pump transfer to a new tank?
Usually yes, if it is in good order. Since the tank is already out and access is free, it is worth inspecting the pump and strainer at the same time.
