Clutch Release Bearings

The clutch release bearing, also called the thrust bearing, presses against the pressure plate fingers when the clutch pedal is pressed, releasing the clamp so gears can be changed.

What it does

It allows the non-rotating release fork to act on the rotating pressure plate. On many modern vehicles it is combined with the slave cylinder as a concentric unit inside the bellhousing.

Signs a clutch release bearing is failing

A rumbling or whirring noise that appears when the pedal is pressed and stops when released
A grinding felt through the pedal
Noise at idle in neutral that changes when the pedal is touched
Difficulty disengaging the clutch fully

When to replace them

Replaced as part of every clutch kit without exception. It is the least expensive item in the assembly and the most common cause of a repeated clutch job.

Why does the release bearing have to be replaced with the clutch?

Because it has worn alongside the disc and cover, and reaching it means removing the gearbox. Reusing a bearing that still turns quietly on the bench is the single most common reason a workshop repeats a clutch job under its own warranty.

What does a failing release bearing sound like?

A rumbling or whirring that appears as the pedal goes down and disappears when it is released. If the noise is present with the pedal up and changes when pressed, suspect the gearbox input shaft bearing instead.
