Bumpers
A bumper is the moulded front or rear covering that absorbs minor impacts and carries lamps, sensors and grilles. Most modern bumpers are plastic covers over an internal reinforcement bar, not a structural part itself.
What it does
The visible cover manages airflow and appearance while an internal beam and crush cans absorb impact energy. The cover also mounts fog lamps, parking sensors and cameras.
Signs a bumper is failing
- Impact damage, cracking or deformation
- Broken mounting tabs causing sagging or misalignment
- Faded or heavily stone-chipped finish
- Damaged sensor housings after a knock
When to replace them
Not a wear item. Replaced after impact damage or when mounting points have broken beyond repair.
What to confirm before ordering
Have these ready and the counter can usually confirm the part in under a minute.
- Front or rear, and the exact model year including facelift
- Trim level, since fog lamp and grille provision differ
- Parking sensor and camera cut-outs
- Whether the part is supplied primed or unpainted
- Whether brackets and absorbers are included
Bumpers questions
Do bumpers come painted?
Generally no. Bumpers are usually supplied in primer ready for preparation and paint. Confirm the finish when quoting so the paint cost is in the customer figure from the start.
Why does trim level matter for a bumper?
Because fog lamp provision, grille shape, parking sensor cut-outs and facelift changes all alter the moulding. Two vehicles with the same model name and year can take completely different bumpers.
