What it does
The handle pulls a rod or cable that releases the latch. Many external handles also house the lock barrel or a keyless entry sensor.
Signs a door handle is failing
- A handle that has snapped or cracked, often at the pivot
- A door that will not open from outside but opens from inside
- A handle that feels loose or has excessive travel
- Keyless entry that no longer responds on one door
When to replace them
Not scheduled, but a genuine wear item. Failures rise sharply on higher-mileage vehicles, particularly on the driver’s door.

Why do door handles break so often?
They are operated many times a day, are usually moulded plastic, and sit in full sun. Heat cycling makes the plastic brittle over time, and the driver’s door fails first because it is used most.
Does the new handle come with a lock barrel?
Usually not, and if it does the key will differ. The original barrel is normally transferred so the vehicle keeps one key. Confirm with the branch when ordering.
